LOWER SCHOOL
Grade 1 - 5
EMPOWERING YOUNG MINDS

ISU’s approach to learning and teaching in the Lower School is guided by the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum framework.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is followed throughout the lower school culminating with the Exhibition in Grade 5. ISU is an IB-World school and shares the common philosophy of a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education.
Inquiry-Based Learning
At ISU, we believe students learn through inquiry and a concept driven curriculum. We spark curiosity and ignite a passion for learning, encouraging students to think critically, develop strong problem-solving strategies, a sense of agency and self-efficacy.
We develop international mindedness and promote taking action as a result of the learning process. We are committed to creating learning environments that are stimulating and provocative. By nurturing a love of learning, we set our students on a path to lifelong academic achievement and personal fulfilment.
Our teachers come from all over the world and regularly participate in professional development to ensure we are lifelong learners, engaging in the most recent effective practice.
We have been officially authorised to offer the PYP since 2008 and our latest Evaluation Report commended us for:
-
The focus on learning and communication based on understanding and respect.
-
Creating a community of students who love learning.
-
The students and their ownership and responsibility for their own learning.
WHAT IS THE PYP?
The PYP curriculum framework emphasises the central principle of agency that is threaded throughout the three pillars of the curriculum: the learner, learning and teaching and the learning community.

The learner - Student agency takes centre stage, from Early Years through to Exhibition. Action is enhanced through participation, advocacy, social justice, entrepreneurship and lifestyle choices.
The learner - International Baccalaureate

Learning and Teaching - We ensure that learning is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant. A transdisciplinary and conceptual inquiry approach encapsulates these aspects of learning, underpinned by authentic integrated assessment.
Learning and teaching - International Baccalaureate

The Learning Community - The IB brings together a global network of learners who share the belief that education is the key to building a more peaceful and connected world. Schools offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP) become integral members of this community, sharing the IB's mission through a dynamic learning environment.
